NAATC Presents Judy’s Life’s Work: Preview Night
On Thursday, October 17, 2024, the Naptown African American Theater Collective premiered Judy’s Life’s Work, directed by Ang Bey. The welcoming staff at the Phoenix Theater greeted us warmly, invited us to pick up a brochure detailing the effort behind the production, and served us the delicious signature drink, ‘The Bee’s Kees,’ at the bar.
As we entered the beautiful, clean theater, we quickly realized there wasn’t a bad seat in the house. Before the show began, the founder and producing director, LaKesha Lorene, greeted us and gave a quick lesson on how we might respond to the play. Unlike most plays where the audience remains quiet, the beauty and uniqueness of Black theater arts encourages audience participation through call and response, a tradition often seen in Black churches across America.
When the show started, the immersive introduction took us by surprise, placing us right on stage with the characters. It felt as if we were “in the room” with them. The storyline tugged at the heartstrings, resonating deeply with Black Americans who understand the distrust of big pharmaceuticals, the struggles of the Black experience, and the injustices within the judicial system. This show beautifully expresses both the joy and pain of parenthood, emphasizing the importance of integrity and the need to stay true to one’s foundation.
I highly recommend making this a “family night out.” This play has the potential to spark meaningful conversations and pave the way to healing for many families. How does the saying go? “WE ALL WE GOT!”
This show will be on stage from October 17 through November 3, 2024. Tickets can be purchased at Pheonix Theater box office and online.
