Culture on the Shelf: Don’t Miss the Midwest Leak Reading Room at This Year’s Crawl
The Indy Indie Book Crawl is returning for its third and most ambitious year yet, transforming the Indianapolis metro area into a literary playground from March 19 to 22, 2026. This year’s crawl features a record-breaking 36 independent bookstores, including the Midwest Leak Reading Room, and seven literary organizations dedicated to celebrating the city’s flourishing book culture. Supported by partners like Indiana Humanities and Bottleworks Hotel, the event kicks off with a party at 8th Day Distillery before sending bookworms on a journey to collect stamps on official bookmarks. With no purchase necessary to participate, the crawl remains an accessible way for the community to discover hidden gems from established anchors to the new pop-up hub at The Stutz.
Beyond just a weekend of browsing, the crawl serves as a vital engine for economic and cultural justice within the local arts scene. By encouraging readers to explore shops within a 45 minute radius of downtown, the event highlights the essential role these small businesses play in anchoring neighborhoods and supporting local creators. Participants can level up their experience with Book Crawl Bingo or aim for one of three grand prize packs by visiting as many locations as possible. As bookstore coordinator Attabey Rodriguez Benitez notes, the hunger for literature in Indy is real, drawing thousands of readers from across the region to connect and prove that the circle city’s independent spirit is written in ink.
