Redefining the Trades: How HER Home Design Academy is Transforming Communities

HER Home Design Academy, based in Indianapolis, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to expanding opportunities in architecture, interior design, construction and remodeling through hands-on, accessible education and mentorship programs. Its Prototype Series includes three immersive tracks: Prototype 5, a five-day program designed to inspire 5th and 6th graders through creative design-build projects; Prototype 6, a six-month experience for adults, particularly women, that offers a comprehensive curriculum across architecture, interior design, construction trades and remodeling with real-world case studies and mentorship; and Prototype 10, a ten-month intensive for high school students in grades 10 through 12 that blends workshops, industry mentorship and projects with pathways to professional certifications.

The academy also offers the Women Werk It series, giving participants practical skills in renovation such as LVP flooring and tile installation, along with an Interior Design Series that explores style trends, paint selection and modern kitchen and bath innovations. For those seeking flexibility, the Customized Learning option allows learners to tailor coursework in design, construction or remodeling, either online or in person, to meet their goals. All programs reflect HER’s mission to dismantle barriers and prepare underrepresented learners for meaningful careers in the design-build industry through inclusive and experiential training.
