Gary Indiana Honors a Native and Living Legend, Songstress Deniece Williams
Grammy Award-winning vocalist Deniece Williams is receiving a powerful tribute in her hometown of Gary, Indiana with a mural honoring her musical legacy and lifelong influence. Known for her soaring four-octave range and genre-defining hits like ‘Free’ and ‘Let’s Hear It for the Boy’, Williams has long been a source of pride for the city. The mural, created by Max Sansing, is set to be unveiled later this year. This is a celebration of her decades of achievement in soul, pop, R&B, and gospel, while also serving as a symbol of inspiration for the next generation of artists growing up in Gary. The mural can be seen on 25th and Broadway.
Born and raised in the city of Gary, Indiana, Williams began her journey singing in local churches before joining Stevie Wonder’s ‘Wonderlove’ and launching an award-winning solo career. With her unmistakable voice and timeless artistry, she has garnered four Grammy Awards and secured a place in music history. The mural project is being led by local artists and community leaders who want to give Williams her flowers while she can still enjoy them and remind the community of the greatness that has emerged from their streets.
Adding to this celebration of her legacy, Williams will also be honored with the Living Legend Award at the 2025 Indiana Black Expo Corporate Luncheon in Indianapolis. As part of one of the largest cultural events in the state, the award recognizes her significant contributions to music and culture and her lasting impact as an artist who has inspired generations.
With both the mural and the IBE recognition, Deniece Williams is being honored not just for her incredible voice but for the enduring joy, beauty, and pride she brings to her hometown, her fans, and the world.
