6 Things You May Not Know About the Indy 500

Let’s have a throw something on the grill!

It’s affordable to attend.

The Indianapolis 500 isn’t just one of the most iconic motorsports events in the world—it’s also surprisingly affordable for families and fans alike. With tickets starting at just $25, the Indy 500 offers an accessible way to experience the excitement without breaking the bank. Families with children will appreciate that kids 15 and under get in free with a paid adult, making it a budget-friendly outing. Attendees are also allowed to bring their own food, beverages, and even alcohol (as long as it’s not in glass containers), helping avoid costly concession prices. Fans can bring their own chairs and water, and those with a parking pass can even fire up a grill and tailgate before the race. With these flexible and wallet-conscious options, the Indy 500 remains one of the most fan-friendly major sporting events in the country.

Time to get the kids behind the wheels early. lol

They’re cultivating the next generation of Indy 500 Champions.

NXG (Next Generation Racing) and Force Indy are opening doors for young people to enter the world of motorsports through an exciting and educational youth program tied to the Indianapolis 500. Designed for boys and girls ages 11 to 15, the NXG program requires students to have completed 5th-grade level math and English and meet specific height (4’8″–5’10”) and weight (75–165 lbs) requirements to safely operate the provided go-karts. Classes are held on Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons from April through September, and NXG supplies all necessary equipment, including safety uniforms. The program is affordable, with a $75 registration fee per class, which may be waived for qualifying families or students supported by participating organizations. On track, Force Indy’s rising talent Myles will be racing during the Indy Grand Prix weekend, with a full schedule including practice, qualifying, and races on May 9 and 10, 2025. With general admission seating available on Saturdays, it’s an inspiring and accessible way for families to witness the future of racing in action.

LET’S GO MYLES ROWE!!!

There is a black driver by the name of Myles Rowe.

Georgia born and New York raised, Myles Rowe is making history once again as he takes center stage at the 2025 Indianapolis 500 as part of the Force Indy team, continuing his groundbreaking journey in motorsports. As a standout graduate of the NXG (Next Generation) Youth Motorsports program, Myles represents the powerful impact of initiatives designed to diversify racing. Now a rising star in the INDY NXT series, Rowe will showcase his skill during the Indy 500 weekend with a practice session, autograph signing, and two competitive races on May 9 and 10. His presence at the Speedway is more than just about speed—it’s a symbol of opportunity, representation, and the next wave of excellence being cultivated through programs like NXG and Force Indy, which are opening doors for young Black drivers to thrive in a traditionally exclusive sport.

There is black history at the Indianapolis 500.

The Indianapolis 500 has a deep but often overlooked Black history, marked by resilience and trailblazing figures who challenged segregation and racial barriers in motorsports. One of the most compelling stories is that of Charles “Charlie” Wiggins, a pioneering African American driver and mechanic from the 1920s and 30s. Despite being barred from competing in the Indy 500 due to the color of his skin, Wiggins became a legendary figure in the parallel world of Black racing circuits and helped train white drivers who went on to compete at the Speedway. His story is powerfully told in the documentary ‘Golden Glory: The Charlie Wiggins Story’, which highlights the courage and contributions of Wiggins and the Black racing league known as the Colored Speedway Association. This film sheds light on the unsung heroes who helped shape the legacy of the sport and paved the way for today’s efforts to bring greater diversity to the track.
