Legendary Tuesday Night at Coaches Tavern Celebrates 19th Anniversary
Take That Tuesday is celebrating 19 years of Hip-Hip in Indianapolis on Tuesday March 25th at Coaches Tavern The event is headlined by DJ MetroGnome, J. MOORE, and many other phenomenal DJs.
Tell us about the birth of Take That Tuesday.
DJ MetroGnome: So, this is our 19 Year anniversary of Take That! Tuesdays and that time period specifically references when I took over the night and made it my/our own thing. Tuesdays at Coaches initially were started even a couple of years before that by a guy named DJ Driver who also happened to bartend at Coaches at the same time in the early/mid 2000s. He broke his leg and wasn’t mobile enough to do it anymore so passed it over to me and I rebranded it as TTT! and built it from the ground up with help from others back in the day including J Moore, DJ Limelight, and other guest DJs. It was a slow grind at the beginning, but that’s usually how things work, right?

For someone that has never heard of Take That Tuesday, what is the vibe?
J Moore: It is a DJs night where they get a break from following trends. If a DJs specialty is east coast Hip-Hop, 80s R&B, or Afrobeat, they can play their set without having to worry about playing anything from the radio. It’s a running joke that we don’t take requests, but we really don’t 95 percent of the time. The DJs we have on stage have put in the work and we want the crowd to appreciate their skill and selection.
DJ MetroGnome: This party is about 2 things: Music and Community. This is not a traditional party or club night. The focus has always been, and will always be, the music… but not just the hits or even what’s
currently hot. This night, since the very beginning when we were hauling vinyl records every week, has been about diversity in the music both in genre and era but also “popularity”. I want this to be a DJs night where we get to play songs and artists that you don’t hear normally or can’t play at most other parties. DJs need space to explore and try new things, try songs the crowd doesn’t know, without the fear that they won’t work or won’t like them. This is that creative space and we’ve curated this on purpose. It doesn’t mean you won’t hear new stuff or won’t be able to get down with what the DJs are playing, but rather that we want music lovers to show up and be open to the variety. As an example, it’s not uncommon to hear this range of artists in a single set or night: Dipset, MF Doom, Buju Banton, Kaytranada, Sade, Larry June, The Ohio Players and Nu Shooz. Will everyone love what we do? Certainly
not. But if you want to learn to trust the DJs and go beyond your maybe one’s own comfort zone then this could be a spot to check out. Plus, I’ve deliberately kept it FREE for all 19 years. Never a door charge,
never a dress code.
What has been the feedback of the event? Does it match the intended impact?
DJ MetroGnome: I have personally experienced and been told by so many DJs that they’re grateful that we provide a space for them to have musical freedom across genres, decades, styles and so on. With that, I’ve made a point to regularly including guests, so I’ve booked close to 200 guest DJs over the last 19 years and that list continues to grow. We’re also very appreciative of all of the waves of regulars we’ve experienced over the years. Y’all have held us down and made it a staple in the city for real.
