Power, Purpose & Representation: Indianapolis Attorney Trina Saunders Brings Her Expertise to MTV’s Teen Mom: Next Chapter

You recently appeared on Teen Mom: The Next Chapter—how did that opportunity come about, and what was it like bringing your legal expertise to such a widely recognized platform?

Attorney Saunders: Gary Shirley, one of the dads from the original Teen Mom show reached out to me due to presence on TikTok which showcases personality and knowledge of the law. He told me has been on Teen Mom and asked if I wanted to film.

Social media played a major role in connecting you with Gary Shirley. How has TikTok and other platforms allowed you to reach more people and educate them on family law?

Attorney Saunders: The cool thing about social media is I can reach thousands of people with one funny. So many things that are common knowledge for me, are things that people just don’t know. You’d be surprised how many people don’t know their rights and give up parenting time or marital property that’s rightfully theirs because they just don’t know!

Your work goes beyond the courtroom—you’re actively involved in helping families facing eviction. What systemic changes do you think are most needed to better support families in crisis?

Attorney Saunders: I wish there was more support for working families. Everybody falls on hard times and not everyone has a strong support system. I would love to see more easily accessible resources for families like housing or rent assistance, or landlords held more accountable.

Legal issues in celebrity culture often make headlines—from custody battles to co-parenting drama. What’s one thing everyday people can learn from high-profile family law cases?

Attorney Saunders: I would say document everything and get your papers in order. Indiana is a no-fault divorce state, so even if you don’t document everything you can still be granted a divorce. However, whether or not the judge sides with you can be make or break because of those documents. I’ll also say, once you start planning for a divorce get your ducks in a row! Financial records, bills, medical records, even documents that relate to the kids, gather it all!

Your career is demanding, but what does self-care look like for you? How do you stay grounded while carrying the emotional weight of your work?

Attorney Saunders: Self-care as is a must. Some of my cases do get emotionally heavy and that’s on top of my personal life! I make it a point to meditate every morning. Starting my day with meditation allows me to set my intentions. I’m also very intentional about my time off. I have to go on vacation at least twice a year! I’m in Thailand right now!

As a successful Black woman in the legal field, how do you hope to inspire the next generation of young women—especially those interested in law and advocacy?

Attorney Saunders: I want young women to look at me and see what’s possible.

What’s next for Trina Saunders? Will we be seeing you on more TV appearances, a book, or maybe even your own legal advice show?

Attorney Saunders: Thank you for asking. Since growing my social media audience, I’ve realized I LOVE being on camera. I have a podcast on the way, and I would absolutely love to have my own court show!
