Next-Gen Narrative: Midwest Leak and the SOS Podcast Crew Take Center Stage at KAN-KAN Cinema

The future of Black cinematic storytelling is officially in hands of our youth, and Naptown’s finest are leading the charge. This summer, Midwest Leak Magazine proudly teamed up with the Indiana Youth Film Festival to amplify the creative voices of local middle school and high school creators.

Undeniably, this partnership is a vital win for our neighborhood. It bridges the gap between raw street-level passion and professional creative industries. Furthermore, by giving young indie artists a major platform, the festival fosters local representation and gives youth the confidence to reclaim their narratives on their own terms.

A Historic Debut for Leak Youth

The massive collaboration came to life during the Young and Free screening on June 27th at the historic KAN-KAN Cinema. Kicking off the afternoon, the Leak Youth, famously known as the SOS Podcast (Student on Student Podcast), debuted their highly anticipated short film as the opening feature.

Their project gave the crowd a deep, behind-the-scenes look into the studio recording process. Most importantly, the film honored the indelible legacy of the late, legendary producer PlayBwoi The Great. Following the opening feature, the theater screened a powerful lineup of short films from other rising Indiana filmmakers.

Diving Into the Creative Process

After the screenings, a dynamic Q&A panel allowed the audience to dive deep into the minds of the young directors. The creators shared their future career goals, technological hurdles, and inspiration. Founded in 2023 by Deonna Weatherly and hosted by Auboni Essence, the three-day Indiana Youth Film Festival featured over 60 films, expert panels, and completely free public workshops. Consequently, our community left inspired, knowing that the next generation of creative media leaders is already fully equipped to change the world.
