On the Move: How IndyGo’s Massive Transit Upgrade Empowers the Community

Public transit is the ultimate lifeline for the culture, keeping our people connected to jobs, family, and opportunities. To elevate the daily commute, IndyGo is completely scrapping its current fare setup. Instead, the city is transitioning to a modernized platform called the new MyKey+ fare system starting July 1, 2026.
This upgrade is a major win for community equity and accessibility. By removing old barriers, the new MyKey+ fare system ensures that every resident, regardless of how they bank, has a seamless, dignified ride across Naptown.
The Critical Transition Timeline
Riders must act quickly to avoid getting locked out of the transit system. Mark these essential phase-out dates on your calendar:
- July 1, 2026: The MyKey+ mobile app and web portal officially launch.
- August 1, 2026: Ticket vending machines shut down, and you can no longer add money to old cards.
- August 31, 2026: This is the absolute final day to use up your remaining balance on the old system.
- September 1, 2026: Old apps and cards are deactivated and will no longer be accepted.
Better Features for the People
The upgraded platform introduces several highly requested features built to protect and empower riders:
- Last Ride Protection: Accounts can drop into a temporary negative balance, ensuring nobody is stranded without funds.
- Group Payments: A single app or card can now pay for multiple riders traveling together.
- Retail Reload Network: Over 100 local retailers, including CVS, Walgreens, and Kroger, will allow riders to load cash onto their accounts at checkout.
Grab Your Free Card
Riders can download the app on July 1 or call IndyGo Customer Care at 317-635-3344 to get a free smart card mailed home. Additionally, riders can visit the Julia M. Carson Transit Center for hands-on assistance. Reduced-fare riders must visit in person to ensure their discounts transition correctly to the new MyKey+ fare system.
