Strength, Soul, and Survival: The Martin Center Marks 30 Years of Running for the Culture

For three decades, Indianapolis has laced up its sneakers for a cause that hits close to home. This June, the Martin Center Sickle Cell Initiative celebrates a monumental milestone: the 30th Annual Sickle Cell 5K Run/Walk. On Saturday, June 6, 2026, Riverside Park will transform into a hub of advocacy, health equity, and community love.
A Legacy of Healing in the Heartland
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most common inherited blood disorder in the U.S., and its impact on our community is profound. In Indiana, over 1,700 individuals live with SCD, with nearly 50% residing right here in Marion County. Nationally, the CDC reports that SCD occurs in approximately 1 out of every 365 Black or African American births.
The Martin Center Sickle Cell Initiative remains at the forefront, currently serving 1,300 families by providing the essential “wraparound” care the healthcare system often misses.
The $15,000 Mission
This year’s goal is a purposeful $15,000. These funds aren’t just numbers; they represent:
- Medical Transportation: Getting warriors to life-saving appointments.
- Food Security: Expanding access to the MCSCI food pantry.
- Advocacy: Educating caregivers and empowering patients to navigate their journey.
