More Than Mentorship: 5000 Role Models of Excellence Opens Doors for Young Black Men

At the Congressional Black Caucus, Miami student Deion Wright shares how mentorship, educational travel, and access to influential networks are helping him prepare for his future.

A simple gesture of kindness led to a conversation about the power of mentorship and opportunity when Midwest Leak met Deion Wright, a rising senior at Miami Southwest Senior High School, during the Congressional Black Caucus gathering in Washington, D.C.

Deion and his peers were handing out roses to women attending the event as representatives of the 5000 Role Models of Excellence, a youth mentorship program founded by Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson.

“We’re just giving out love today,” Deion explained.

Behind the roses was a much larger story about a program creating opportunities for young Black men to develop leadership skills, build relationships, pursue higher education, and experience environments that expand their vision for the future.

Mentorship That Extends Beyond the Classroom

Deion joined 5000 Role Models of Excellence as a freshman after being introduced to the program by his school counselor, Mr. Williams. Now preparing for his senior year, he credits the experience with providing positive role models and opening doors to opportunities he may otherwise have missed.

The program offers multiple levels of engagement, including a pathway to becoming a Wilson Scholar, which Deion is currently pursuing. Along with mentorship and scholarship opportunities, participating students gain exposure through educational travel, leadership experiences, and networking with accomplished professionals.

During their visit to Washington, D.C., the young men toured historic monuments, participated in Congressional Black Caucus activities, and connected with leaders from across the country.

Deion also had the opportunity to help introduce a discussion featuring civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump and Congresswoman Wilson, addressing violence, police brutality, and challenges facing young Black men.

Building Connections for the Future

For Deion, networking is especially meaningful as he pursues his dream of becoming a pilot. He has been exploring aviation education opportunities at institutions including Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Miami Dade College, and Florida Memorial University.

While attending the gathering, he was introduced to a Tuskegee University alumnus, creating another potential connection as he considers his educational future.

His experience illustrates the importance of introducing young people to professional networks early, allowing them to build social capital, explore career pathways, and establish relationships that may influence their futures.

Programs like 5000 Role Models of Excellence demonstrate how intentional mentorship, travel, and access to influential spaces can support young people as they discover their gifts and develop the confidence to pursue their ambitions.

For Deion, a week spent handing out roses, exploring Washington, D.C., and meeting new people offered another opportunity to grow into the future he envisions.
