NaShan Clay, Changing the Narrative One Hood at a Time
By: Le’Deana
Nashan Clay is an author, mentor, storyteller and dreamer determined to show the people in her hood of 42nd and Post and beyond through a lens of truth and love.
NaShan Clay understands the power of who gets to hold the camera.
Through her Hood Vlogs, the Indianapolis entrepreneur and content creator has traveled the country documenting neighborhoods, people and communities from a perspective grounded in proximity and real conversation. Her work has taken her through more than 100 neighborhoods while building an audience around stories that are often shaped by people looking in from the outside.
NaShan’s episode of Evolving Entrepreneurs brings that conversation home.
Growing up around Brentwood near 42nd and Post Road in Indianapolis helped shape the way she sees community and the responsibility she feels when documenting it. Her work reflects an understanding that media influences how people see a neighborhood, how residents see themselves and what stories become part of the larger cultural record.
That responsibility has become an important part of NaShan’s evolution as an entrepreneur.
Throughout the Evolving Entrepreneurs experience, she explored the relationship between authentic storytelling, reputation and opportunity. Building a successful media platform means thinking carefully about what your name represents, the relationships connected to your work and the impact your content can have long after it is published.
Her connection to young people also continues to influence what she creates. Through Brentwood Kid and the message “The Hood Still Dreams,” NaShan is developing another way to speak directly to the communities that shaped her. The phrase carries an understanding that imagination, ambition and possibility exist in every neighborhood.
Her journey also reflects one of the central ideas behind Evolving Entrepreneurs: owning your narrative requires intention.
NaShan has learned how to use the camera as a tool for documentation while continuing to develop the business, products and ideas surrounding her platform. Every neighborhood she visits adds another chapter to an archive being created in real time.
For Midwest Leak, documenting NaShan’s evolution also means documenting an Indianapolis creator whose work has grown far beyond the neighborhood where it began while remaining connected to the people and places that gave it meaning.
