The journey to independence just got a major green light in the Hoosier State. Starting July 1, teen drivers in Indiana can officially obtain their driver’s licenses on their 16th birthday. Previously, the state required young residents to wait until they were 16 years and 90 days old to hit the road solo.

This exciting shift comes courtesy of House Enrolled Act 1200, which Gov. Mike Braun signed into law on March 12. Additionally, the bill allows eligible 16-year-olds to obtain a motorcycle endorsement. While this change provides families with much more flexibility, safety remains the absolute top priority. All other licensing procedures and standard requirements remain exactly the same.

• Obey Posted Speed Limits: Speeding causes nearly one-third of all fatal teen accidents. Leaving early ensures you never have to rush.
• Practice Defensive Driving: Always anticipate other drivers’ mistakes, maintain a safe following distance, and keep your eyes scanning the road ahead.
