Madam Walker Legacy Center Reaches New Heights for the Culture with Rooftop Sky Breaking

The Madam Walker Legacy Center (MWLC) reached a historic milestone on February 4 with a “sky-breaking” ceremony, officially signaling the start of the final construction phase for its rooftop expansion. Scheduled to open in May 2026, the project is a centerpiece of the center’s 2023–2027 strategic plan, aimed at enhancing the landmark’s capacity as a cultural and economic anchor for Indianapolis. President and CEO Kristian Little Stricklen emphasized the importance of this moment, stating, “Today’s sky-breaking and construction launch reflects years of disciplined planning, partnership and belief in the power of legacy institutions to shape the future”. She further noted that the “calculated expansion builds on our capacity to serve as a cultural, economic, and community anchor for Indianapolis while advancing the long-term sustainability of the Walker”.

The ceremony brought together local leaders and stakeholders to celebrate the expansion, which follows the establishment of an $8 million endowment to support core operations and historic preservation. Dr. Nichole Wilson, Madam Walker Legacy Center Board Chair, highlighted the governance behind the project, saying, “The Madam Walker Legacy Center rooftop expansion is a demonstration of the Board’s commitment to accountability, stewardship and long-term impact”. Supported by the Mellon Foundation, the project ensures the historic landmark remains vibrant for generations to come. As the center approaches its Centennial Anniversary in 2027, this expansion represents a significant step in preserving history while elevating the experiences offered to the community.
