Independent films often serve as a vessel for difficult truths, stories that challenge audiences to confront pain, loss, and resilience. The Zuri Johnson Story, a new independent release, does just that. Behind its fictionalized characters and settings lies the real-life inspiration of Skylea Carmack, a 10-year-old girl whose life was tragically cut short in 2019.

In August of that year, Skylea was reported missing in Gas City, Indiana. Days later, her body was discovered hidden in a shed. Her stepmother, Amanda Carmack, was convicted and sentenced to life without parole in the Indiana Department of Corrections. Yet as devastating as the trial’s conclusion was, no sentence could erase the grief felt by Skylea’s family or the heartbreak endured by her community.

Producer Richarh Tyson shared the motivation behind the project, saying:

The Zuri Johnson Story is inspired by Skylea’s life and what happened to her with names, races, and locations changed for the film. But at its heart, it’s about making sure stories like hers are not forgotten. As the film streams to audiences everywhere, I want us to remember the little girl whose story started it all: Skylea Carmack.”

The film’s poster (shown above) captures the intensity of its central character, Zuri, whose story channels both innocence and resilience against the backdrop of tragedy. The project demonstrates how art can be used to preserve memory, ensuring that victims like Skylea are never overlooked or forgotten.
