“Can’t Touch This” Blends Ritual, Tech, and Legacy in a Groundbreaking Afrofuturist Stage Reading

The stage is set for the developmental reading of “Can’t Touch This,” a new Afrofuturism ensemble stage play written by Dr. Austin Dean Ashford. The performance will take place Friday, October 24, at Morning Star, located at 2307 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street in Indianapolis. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 6:30 p.m. This unique production combines elements of ritual, ghost story, and family drama, featuring dominoes that hold memory, a smart house that glitches with ancestral voices, and a family navigating silence and survival. Guests can enjoy drinks and light refreshments and are encouraged to stay for a post-show talkback with the cast to share feedback on this new work. The staged reading runs approximately one hour and ten minutes with a brief intermission, and audience participation plays a key role in its development. Attendees should note the venue’s no-shoes policy, so socks are recommended for this intimate and imaginative night of theater.
